People will always be able to get drugs, even if they have to lie, cheat and steal to get them. Why can’t the government understand that most people who do drugs, do it as a concious choice and don’t care about political correctness, thier health, or social conventions.
Phrohibition failed, so why are drugs still illeagal? An adult shoud be free to choose what they put in thier body.

He is worried about Columbia trying to assassinate him.
It would also undermine his political position in the area by shifting the balance of power.

If the US could end prohibiton on alcohol but not end our “Drug War” with Colombia et al, can it be that its easier to kill Latin Americans instead of Canadians/British Commonwealthers?

Prohibition was a stupid amendment that was supported by the WCTU and just about no one else. It was wildly unpopular. Worse, it was widely laughed at, as liquor was imported across the great lakes all throughout prohibition. It was even easier to thwart the law in winter when Lake Erie froze over.
So when the congress rescinded the 18th amendment and ended prohibition, that enjoyed widespread support.
Drugs are another issue altogether. There is no lobby for drugs, and drugs are seen as an evil. Therefore there is support, however misguided, for a so called War on Drugs. And that makes the war on drugs still socially and militarily acceptable.
Somewhere I read that the whole War on Drugs/DARE program has been a colossal waste of money and completely failed in its goals. What the US ought to do is license and tax drugs instead of this silly ongoing war….
