I would like to break up this question into three distinct perspectives of thought.
FIRST, Direct Cost Questions:
How much money did we give to countries like Columbia in the “war on drugs”?
How much money did we spend arresting and trying people caught with an ounce of marijuana?
How much money do we currently spend on the overcrowded jails of people who sold an ounce of marijuana?
How much money do we spend on the DEA programs?
What is the total direct expense the USA has incurred?
NEXT efficiency questions:
How effective has the war on drugs been?
Have we eliminated the use of drugs?
Are fewer drugs being used now, than 10 or 20 years ago?
Have the expenses we have paid in the “war on drugs” been worth it? For example, for every dollar spent, how much more drug free have we made ourselves?
NEXT, Opportunity cost questions:
What could we do with the money we give other countries in the “War on Drugs”?
How much money could we generate if we taxed the heck out of drugs like marijuana?
How much could we reduce government spending if we stopped the aggressive war on drugs?
How much opportunity costs are there?
FOR THE RECORD:
I do not use, nor have I ever used any drugs. I am speaking from an economic standpoint and my question is presented from an economic standpoint. I am not speaking as to the morality of drugs, simply upon the amount of resources we spend trying to stop people from using them.

Im doing student congress, and I want to make a bill saying we will end our war on drugs january 1st, 2012 and send the money that would be going to towards this “war” directly to education.
