Question: What examples from the past are good common sense to fight the “war on drugs”?
On the lighter side, I’d say keeping drugs out of the hands of the Dallas Police Dept.
While making room to create a more efficient evidence storage room, they shipped off old cabinets to be sold at a office supply outlet. One cabinet happened to contain 128 sealed packages of seized drugs ranging from marijuana, heroine, methamphetamine, and cocaine. — Can we all say, “Oops! My bad.”
(Dallas police mistakenly send 123 bags of illegal drugs to store) http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/yahoolatestnews/stories/DN-drugsfound_17met.ART.State.Edition1.4ba5782.html?so=TimeStampAscending&ocp=4#slcgm_comments_anchor

On a serious note, I think raising our children in an atmosphere of compassion, understanding & clear parental guidance would curb a lot of the desire for child to want to alter their reality B4 they even know what reality is.
Secondly, they should be supplied with factual information about drugs., i.e. “Yes, they can make you feel good, but while staying in that ‘feel good’ place, you will never learn how to handle the hard problems in life that don’t feel good. But you need to learn these skills to get past your problems so that the problem is GONE and not waiting to kick you in the butt again b/c you never learned how to cope with real life in the1st place.”

What are other ideas? Either on the home front or in society?
Singapore death penalty sounds a bit harsh. Especially if a person just bought a new filing cabinet on sale without first looking through all of the drawers. – LOL

Do drug dealers, politicians and law enforcement profit from the “War on Drugs”?

Question: Do drug dealers, politicians and law enforcement profit from the “War on Drugs”?
I mean, I understand it’s the politicians fault for not revamping the system and ignoring what the people want. Look up any statistical poll and majority of Americans believe the Drug War is a complete failure. I blame money hungry politicians and people who are high up in the law enforcement community for keeping the status quo when are system needs to be revamped. How did the government ever get involved with trying to moderate human behavior and trying to enforce morality on people? I mean, you can’t tell me locking up massive amounts of people have helped our country deal with a drug problem. Also, don’t give me that same old rhetoric “well drugs destroys lives”…Well so do guns, cigarettes and alcohol. In fact, my closest family member has an extreme alcohol addiction and the last thing I would want is for her to be locked up for her addiction…and yet we continue to lock up people for choosing a different vice. Fact is, prohibiting anything never works, it just creates more violence, more addicts and more profits…Doesn’t that mean the politicians, law enforcement and drug dealers are all on the same side in the end since they are the only ones who profit from the “War on Drugs”? I think it’s pretty sickening if you ask me.

Who benefits the most from the “WAR OF DRUGS”?

Question: Who benefits the most from the “WAR OF DRUGS”?
I have always heard that it was the police who profitted the most, or one of the fastest growing industries in the US and the world – the criminal justice INDUSTRY. They have figured out a way to make money from LOCKING PEOPLE UP, and the lawyers lobby to have stricter laws passed, so that YOU have a greater chance of being imprisoned, and THEY can make their 30 pieces of silver from your traumatic, life-altering experience.

Prison companies use political influence to protect their profit margins. The industry spent over one million dollars in 1999, lobbying and contributing to state officials. To ensure the continued need for prison space, lobbyists for private prisons support 149 tough-on-crime legislation, including mandatory minimum sentences, life terms for “three strikes,” and sentencing juveniles as adults.

But i read recently that drug lords profit the most, and drug lords have to pay off law enforcement….

“Prohibition is of most benefit to drug dealers and drug lords, as prohibition laws drive prices up, securing greater profits for those in the illegal drug black market.

Prohibition only creates crime and related social harms. This was the case in the 1920s with alcohol, and it is the case now with currently illegal drugs.”

This makes me wonder, who profits the MOST off of the war on drugs? the police? those in the criminal justice industry? Prison companies? Or is it the drug lords working in cooperation with the police?

(By the way, there is a lot of great info on this web site.)

http://www.drugwarfaq.com/

Since the enactment of mandatory minimum sentencing for drug users, the Federal Bureau of Prisons budget has increased by 1,954%. Its budget jumped from $ 220 million in 1986 to more than $ 4.3 billion in 2001.

Aw HECK! You already named the biggies. Yes the Government, through taxes and law enforcement, and of course our prison systems, and we won’t even mention lawyers and politicians. All this adds up to more money for the drug lords. Just watch the papers as they proudly add up all the pot busts. In our area (N.E. Calif.) so far this year it’s 145 Million “Off the streets” Well the drug lords lost 145 Million in pot and they still made a tone of money, something smells fishy here and it ain’t the fertilizer.
