Getting Involved: Resources for Mennonites
(Back to Mennonite resource page) (Go to Day of Action)
Dear sister churches and Mennonite peace advocates,
Greetings from Justapaz! We write to you with an invitation. Please consider participating in the Day of Action and Prayer for Colombia on May 21. The coalition effort will use the website PeaceinColombia (peaceincolombia.org) as place to share materials, strategies, talking points, legislative action, and what everyone is doing and organizing. What you do in North America will be shared with church groups in Colombia on June 4, World Day of Prayer. As a coalition we will provide a variety of worship and legislative resources. We at Justapaz will be contributing the story of a pastor and social leader killed March 2 and ways we are asking for your support through prayer and communication with members of Congress, the "road map for peace" created by Protestant churches in February of this year, sample sermons as well as some Mennonite worship materials.
If you would like to be an organizational co-sponsor -- and we are looking for a long list -- please let Lora Steiner of the MCC Washington Office and Erik Cooke at Witness for Peace know. Lora_Steiner@mcc.org and erik@witnessforpeace.org. You can sign on as a church, conference peace group, grassroots solidarity group, or as a social action, mission, or sister church committee of your church. Please include your church's name.
Here is the description of the event:
Remembering the Victims and Rejoicing with the Peacemakers: Days of Prayer and Action for Colombia
May 21 -- just before the Foreign Ops Appropriations bill, the Administration's budget request for 2007 including funding for Colombia, reaches the floor of the Congress.
Mission statement:
We come together to remember the victims of Colombia's brutal armed conflict
and to rejoice with the peacemakers. We stand in solidarity and join in prayer
with the people of Colombia who creatively, courageously, and sacrificially
struggle for dignified life and justice in the midst of impoverishment and enduring
violence.
We also commit to working in our communities, with our elected officials, to change our government's policy which contributes to the violence and destruction our Colombian brothers and sisters face on a daily basis and to support a true and lasting peace.
Amidst all the pain and suffering and the ongoing "crucifixion" in Colombia, we find hopeful signs of new life and glimpses of the Reign of God. The accompaniment of the international community is an invaluable support to sisters and brothers here. Will you join us for this Day of Prayer and Action?
For peace,
Janna
