As Mexico’s war on drugs rages on, the use of crystal methamphetamine – also known as “crystal meth” or “ice” – continues to rise. Addictive and affordable, it’s become a major player in the country’s massive drug trade. From Tijuana, Al Jazeera’s Mariana Sanchez has more.

Consider only the most recent raid to cause a national outrage: On May 5, 2011, 26-year-old Jose Guerena, who survived two tours in the Iraq War, was shot and killed during a raid on his house by a Pima County, Arizona SWAT team that fired dozens of bullets through his front door. Guerena, married and a father of two, had just finished a 12-hour shift at a local mine. Law enforcement sources claim he was involved in narco-trafficking but have yet to produce any evidence supporting that claim. Officers involved in the death have been cleared of wrongdoing. Guerena’s death is not an isolated incident. As USA Today reports, an astonishing 70000 to 80000 militarized police raids take place on a annual basis in America, many of them on mistaken suspects and many of them ending with injury or death for police and citizens alike. I Have A Gift: Good question. All of government’s “war” efforts (hell, government in general) seem to be unraveling into phoniness, don’t they?

Why does the U.S. feel the need to be so heavily involved in Latin America? How is it beneftting them, esp. by getting involved with this whole “war on drugs”? I think it is so ridiculous but noone has given me a good reason for why they are involved besides “America gets into everyone’s business”. ANSWERS PLEASEEEE!

Because of the drugs and gang activity that comes from Latin America. The US has the resources to protect and better it’s citizens’ lives, not that it will, but it can.

Depends on the state. In CA if you own a house and get caught growing weed, they can seize your house. It also depends on how often you get caught. For first time offenders they often just send you to treatment.

I think it depends on what state your in…in CA most cops would just toss the weed and let you go. Somewhere like VA or TX for instance, I’d be scared of getting caught.

I would agree to some degree though, that the majority of the arrests are saved for minorities…good ‘ol racism, alive and well!
