NOTE: I don’t use drugs and don’t plan to.
drona: You seem to be unaware that EVERY SINGLE PERSON who wants to use drugs . . . does. Some get caught, most don’t.

Your heroic “war on drugs” is a laughable failure. We can’t save people from themselves. As a matter of fact, that is not the government’s job, in the first place.

why does the U.S. get involved in Latin America, specifically to fight the “war on drugs”?

Question: why does the U.S. get involved in Latin America, specifically to fight the “war on drugs”?
I am taking a Latin American Social Movements class currently, and I am appalled at the behavior of the U.S. with their involvement in Latin America; specifically with the creation of the School of the Americas. I understand that it is still open, that America still trains Central American soldiers to fight their own people, but now it is to fight the war on drugs (when previously it was to promote democracy/ combat communism).

Why does the U.S. feel the need to be so heavily involved in Latin America? How is it beneftting them, esp. by getting involved with this whole “war on drugs”? I think it is so ridiculous but noone has given me a good reason for why they are involved besides “America gets into everyone’s business”. ANSWERS PLEASEEEE!

Because of the drugs and gang activity that comes from Latin America. The US has the resources to protect and better it’s citizens’ lives, not that it will, but it can.

Depends on the state. In CA if you own a house and get caught growing weed, they can seize your house. It also depends on how often you get caught. For first time offenders they often just send you to treatment.

I think it depends on what state your in…in CA most cops would just toss the weed and let you go. Somewhere like VA or TX for instance, I’d be scared of getting caught.

I would agree to some degree though, that the majority of the arrests are saved for minorities…good ‘ol racism, alive and well!

Did “The War On Drugs” only make things worse?

Question: Did “The War On Drugs” only make things worse?
Though I’m a conservative for the most part and don’t condone the use of drugs, I’ve noticed that many young adults today are completely naive about the things they put in their bodies. I’ve dabbled in the current lineup of what’s out there, comparing them to the substances that were staples in the old school days. I’ve found that most all of these items are nowhere near those that they are supposed to be similar to and make the person more ill then anything other.

I wonder if the war on drugs did more to cut off knowledge of substances (which I believe is critical to the safe practice) rather than actually stopping the use of drugs.

The end result being kids dying from mixtures of substances that have no right being together in the first place.

I think it changed some dynamics like you pointed out. When people think of drug abuse they think of crack, meth, etc… but there’s a lot of abuse of prescription drugs which can be more attainable, such as pain killers, muscle relaxers and anti-depressants
