As Mexico’s war on drugs rages on, the use of crystal methamphetamine – also known as “crystal meth” or “ice” – continues to rise. Addictive and affordable, it’s become a major player in the country’s massive drug trade. From Tijuana, Al Jazeera’s Mariana Sanchez has more.

With their homes turned into battlegrounds, the indigenous community around Toribío continue their peaceful resistance to the invasion of free trade, armies and guerrillas. Morris combines this inside experience with personal testimonies from all sides, for a transparent exploration of Colombia’s drawn-out conflict. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s organization, The Foundation for a New Iberian-American Journalism, awarded Contravía’s episode Toribío its highest prize in 2007, for their efforts to raise visibility for the victims of war in a censored and bellicose media environment. Note: This video contains graphic images of violence and mature language. Viewer discretion is advised. “No Knock Raid,” written and performed by Toronto-based musician Lindy, is a searing indictment of one of the most aggressive, ubiquitous, and mistaken tactics in the War on Drugs. Consider only the most recent raid to cause a national outrage: On May 5, 2011, 26-year-old Jose Guerena, who survived two tours in the Iraq War, was shot and killed during a raid on his house by a Pima County, Arizona SWAT team that fired dozens of bullets through his front door. Guerena, married and a father of two, had just finished a 12-hour shift at a local mine. Law enforcement sources claim he was involved in narco-trafficking but have yet to produce any evidence supporting that claim. Officers involved in the death have been cleared of wrongdoing. Guerena’s death is not an isolated incident. As USA Today reports, an astonishing 70000 to 80000 militarized police raids take place on a annual basis in America, many of them on mistaken suspects and many of them ending with injury or death for police and citizens alike. As Reason Contributing Editor Radley Balko and others have documented, the militarization of standard police practice is a direct consequence of the modern-day War on Drugs, started 40 years ago by President Richard Nixon – and perpetuated by every administration since. (For a comprehensive report on the failure of the drug war to achieve any of its stated goals, read …

Read MoreColombia, the Republic of Columbia is a country in the north west of South America. The country of Colombia is bound to the north and north-west by the Caribbean Sea, to the east by Venezuela and Brazil, to the south by Ecuador and Peru, and to the west by Panama and the Pacific Ocean. The official language in Colombia is Spanish. The capital city of Colombia is Bogota, with an estimated population of 44,000,000.
Colombia with a total area of 1,138,910 sq km is the fourth biggest country in South America. This rank of fourth comes after Brazil, Argentina and Peru. This area can be divided up into land, 1,038,700 sq km, and water, 100,210 sq km. Although it is in the Tropical area The tropical climate, is made different by the influence of the Andes mountain range. Colombia is tropical in the coastlands and lowlands and can get very cool in the mountains.
Colombia suffers from war and poverty, much like other south american countries. They lack the communications infrastructure that we take for granted in the US. While we search the internet for deals like a 1800contacts coupon, many areas of Colombia are without running water and electricity.
The eastern half of Colombia, which is more than half its total physical size, is plain and composed by rainforest. Colombia is crossed by rivers which belong to both the Amazon and Orinoco basins. The northern part of Colombia is called “Los Llanos”, it is a savanna region. Colombian Pacific Plains at times of the year are among the most rainy parts in the world!

I Have A Gift: Good question. All of government’s “war” efforts (hell, government in general) seem to be unraveling into phoniness, don’t they?
I’ll bet you were undeniably CERTAIN that I would defend some sort of bullshit Democrat policy, weren’t you? Come on, admit it.
One day, in the distant future, YOU will become aware of the existence of more than TWO ways to approach the world of politics.
Your tiny –and false– left/right paradigm, is the DIRECT result of your inability to reason.
Without the desire to seek answers and information beyond what you are spoon-fed by FOX and CNN, you will never rise above the noise and confusion, and be able see the world as anything more than a simple bit of BLUE and RED.

Question: The “war on drugs” is really just a war on Americans. Why don’t we stop it?

NOTE: I don’t use drugs and don’t plan to.
drona: You seem to be unaware that EVERY SINGLE PERSON who wants to use drugs . . . does. Some get caught, most don’t.
Your heroic “war on drugs” is a laughable failure. We can’t save people from themselves. As a matter of fact, that is not the government’s job, in the first place.
